Last time

Before we start: last time, in Robotics and the characteristics of a robot, you learned these points. Here they are again on one card. Keep them in mind, because today builds on them.

Machines that seem to think

Your email sorts out the spam. Your music app suggests a song you like. Nobody wrote a rule for every email or every song. The programs learned from data. In this lesson, we meet artificial intelligence, expert systems, and machine learning.

What is AI?

Artificial intelligence is a branch of computer science. It builds computer systems that simulate intelligent human behaviour. That means reasoning, problem solving and learning.

Three characteristics of AI

First, a collection of data, and rules for using that data. Second, the ability to reason: using the rules and data to reach a conclusion. Third, the ability to learn and adapt: changing its own rules and data from experience.
