Last time

Before we start: last time, in Data storage units and file sizes, you learned these points. Here they are again on one card. Keep them in mind, because today builds on them.

Too big to send

You record a video and WhatsApp says the file is too big. Compression is the answer: making a file smaller. There are two kinds, lossy and lossless, and Cambridge asks about both every year.

Why compress?

Why compress a file? It takes less storage space. It uploads, downloads and sends faster, and needs less bandwidth. It uses less of your data allowance, and it can fit under an email's attachment limit.
