Last time

Before we start: last time, in Integrated development environments (IDEs), you learned these points. Here they are again on one card. Keep them in mind, because today builds on them.

You type a name, a page appears

You type a website name, and in less than a second a page appears from a computer on the other side of the world. People say internet and web as if they were the same thing. They are not. In this lesson we separate them, and follow one page all the way to your screen.

The internet

The internet is a very large global network of interconnected networks. It is the infrastructure: routers, cables, servers and computers. It carries many services, such as email, video calls and file sharing.

The World Wide Web

The World Wide Web is a collection of web pages and websites. The pages are written in HTML, and linked together by hyperlinks. You view them with a web browser, using the internet to reach them. So the web is one service that runs on the internet.

Internet against web

The internet is the network, the hardware. The web is the collection of pages that is accessed using the internet. Email uses the internet too, but it is not part of the web.
