Last time
Before we start: last time, in Umar and Uthman, you learned these points. Here they are again on one card. Keep them in mind, because today builds on them.
What a Muslim believes
Belief comes before practice. Four of the articles of faith appear as ten plus four mark questions: belief in God, in the revealed books, in predestination, and in the Last Day. Each answer needs the exact terms and a clear reason why the belief matters in daily life. All the beliefs also connect: tawhid is the centre, and the others follow from it.
Belief in God: three parts
Lordship and supremacy: heavens, earth and all between belong to God. He alone created everything from nothing, everything depends on Him, and only He can end it and bring it to life again. Belief in His supremacy means to accept Him as the supreme lawgiver and absolute judge, and to submit to His laws. God alone is entitled to worship, inwardly and outwardly, with heart, body and soul. No one can be worshipped alongside Him.
Names, attributes and shirk
God is known by His most beautiful names and attributes, 99 in the well known list. Examples: Al-Qawee, Al-Ahad, Al-Aleem and Ar-Rahman. They reflect His majesty, power and perfection. He is the Forgiver, Al-Ghafur, and Oft forgiving, Al-Ghaffar. He forgives all who turn to Him in repentance. As He alone is perfect, no one else should be named or described with His qualities. Attributing God's qualities to another deity or a human is shirk.
