Last time

Before we start: last time, in Decimals, conversions and recurring decimals, you learned these points. Here they are again on one card. Keep them in mind, because today builds on them.

Slices of a pizza

A pizza is cut into eight slices. You eat three, your friend eats two. What fraction have you eaten together? What is left? Fractions answer these questions exactly. Today you add, subtract, multiply and divide them, with and without mixed numbers, and always give the answer in its simplest form.

Equivalent fractions and simplifying

Equivalent fractions have the same value. Multiply or divide the top and bottom by the same number. To simplify, divide top and bottom by their highest common factor. Thirty-six and forty-eight share twelve. An answer is in its simplest form when no number divides both the top and the bottom.
