Last time

Before we start: last time, in Frequency tables, charts and scatter diagrams, you learned these points. Here they are again on one card. Keep them in mind, because today builds on them.

One number for the whole group

How tall is a typical student in your class? An average is one number that stands for the whole group. But there are three different averages, and they can give very different answers. Mean, median and mode each answer a slightly different question. The range then tells you how spread out the data is.

Mean, median, mode, range

The mean is the total of all values divided by how many there are. The median is the middle value when the data is in order. The mode is the most common value. The range is the largest value minus the smallest. For an even number of values, the median is halfway between the two middle ones.
