Last time

Before we start: last time, in Enlargements, you learned these points. Here they are again on one card. Keep them in mind, because today builds on them.

Slide, flip, turn

Shape A sits on a grid. Slide it across the grid and you have a translation. Flip it over a line and you have a reflection. Turn it round a point and you have a rotation. In all three, the shape stays exactly the same size, so the image is congruent to the original. Only the position and the direction change.

Translation

A translation slides every point the same distance in the same direction. We describe it with a column vector. The top number is movement across: positive is right, negative is left. The bottom number is up for positive, down for negative. The point two, three under the vector four, minus two goes to six, one.
