Last time
Before we start: last time, in Coordinates, linear graphs and y = mx + c, you learned these points. Here they are again on one card. Keep them in mind, because today builds on them.
Two points tell you everything
Give me two points, A and B. From them I can find how steep the line is, where its middle is, and how long it is. Then I can build lines parallel or perpendicular to it. All of it comes from the same two differences: across and up.
Gradient
The gradient of AB is the change in y over the change in x. Always subtract in the same order, top and bottom. Take A at three, twenty and B at five, ten. The rise is ten minus twenty: minus ten. The run is two. So the gradient is minus five. The line goes steeply down.
How often it comes up
How often Cambridge has asked each part, counted by ExamYard from every past paper in its question bank: Perpendicular bisectors · Perpendicular lines.
The whole chapter: Coordinate Geometry.
Chapter 18: Coordinates and graphs
