Two sets, one picture

Two schools, two sets of throwing distances. How do you compare them fairly? Put both on one diagram, and the shape, the middle and the spread all show at once. Then compress each set into five numbers, and shortcut the arithmetic with coded totals.

Back-to-back stem-and-leaf

The stems go down the middle. One set of leaves runs out to the left, the other to the right. Order the leaves, smallest nearest the stem. On the left that means they read in reverse from the stem outwards. Always add a key, saying what a stem and leaf stand for, for both sides.

Reading the Lakeview data

Lakeview's eleven throws are 10, 14, 19, 22, 26, 27, 28, 30, 32, 33 and 41 metres, already in order. With eleven values the median is the sixth value, which is 27. Riverside in order is 18, 18, 20, 21, 23, 24, 25, 25, 30, 36, 37, so its median is 24.
