Last time
Before we start: last time, in Fasting, pilgrimage and jihad, you learned these points. Here they are again on one card. Keep them in mind, because today builds on them.
Gathering, giving and celebrating
Three parts of Muslim life bring people together. Friday prayer gathers the community each week. Zakat shares wealth with those in need each year. And the two Eids mark the end of Ramadan and the end of the hajj season. Each topic asks for how it is done, who it is for, and why it matters.
Preparing for Jum'a
Great reward is promised for attending Jum'a prayers, so worshippers prepare themselves especially for it. Preparation includes bathing, trimming the nails, wearing fresh and clean clothes, and using ittar, perfume, before arriving at the mosque. Part a has two halves, preparation and special features. Give each about five marks.
Special features of Jum'a
It is prayed at the same time as zuhr, which it replaces. Two fard rakaat are prayed instead of the four of zuhr. It is prayed in congregation in a mosque, behind an imam. It cannot be prayed individually. The imam delivers a sermon in two parts, which is essential to listen to. A brief sitting by the imam separates one from the other. After the sermon the imam leads the prayer, and only the fard rakaat are prayed in congregation.
